Bayantel has a new product called Bayantel Span. It's a wireless landline that provides unlimited landline calls from Bayantel to other landlines (like PLDT, Globelines, etc) and vice versa. Its coverage area supposedly includes the all of Metro Manila. NDD charges cost around P4.50 per minute and text messages are P1.00 per text. Text messages sent between Bayantel Span subscribers are unlimited and free. You can enjoy all these features for only P749 per month. Initial cash outlay depends on the type of wireless unit. There are several units to choose from, prices ranging from P2,000 to P8,000. An agent went to us and demonstrated a Chinese branded cellphone worth P2,800 to us. The offer was tempting since there was a "money back" guarantee that allows us to try out SPAN and if dissatisfied, can get a refund as long as we return the unit within 15days. I bought the unit last Monday. Coverage wise, I have tested the signal in Makati, Pasig, Quezon City, Caloocan City, Malabon and Valenzuela. As long as you are outdoors, the signal is clear. However, the signal disappears once you get indoors. I can’t get a signal inside my house. I don’t know if it is due to the unit since I chose the cheaper one or SPAN really has poor coverage indoors. There are also blind spots along Edsa. The battery life of my unit lasted just one day. I returned the unit today. I think the SPAN concept is a good one but still needs to iron out some kinks. I would like to try the more expensive unit but am afraid that it might be a waste of time and will end up returning it again. Returning the unit at Bayantel was quite easy though; just bring the OR, IDs and other docs, take a number and wait for your turn. The customer service guy was quite nice and didn’t make any comment. Maybe I will try it out again in the future if they lower the costs of the units and have a stronger signal.
