The Ghost Month

You might be hearing a lot of talk about ghost months lately and have been curious to know what's it about and why it matters to you as a trader.

This years Ghost month starts on August 13 and ends September 10 year 2007

The Ghost Festival is a traditional Chinese festival and holiday, which is celebrated by Chinese in many countries. In the Chinese calendar (a lunar calendar), the Ghost Festival is on the 14th night of the seventh lunar month.

Cycle of Market Emotions

This graph can be applied to currencies, equity markets, and even housing markets.

The cycle of market emotions: optimism, excitement, thrill, euphoria (maximum financial risk), anxiety, denial, fear, desperation, capitulation, despondency, depression, hope, relief, optimism
Retail Investors chase returns, buy and sell short term, and act on emotion. Institutional investors consider both return and risk, and invest long term with broad diversification.

I think for the Philippine Stock Market, we have slid from the Euphoria stage to the panic stage in just these three weeks.   This week, America sets the tone as investors ponder their dwindling returns on the year, big events in the week ahead include the government's sometimes unpredictable payrolls report and quarterly earnings from heavy-hitters such as General Motors (Charts, Fortune 500) and Walt Disney Co. (Charts, Fortune 500).

La Salle Archers file protest against Ateneo Blue Eagles

MANILA, Philippines — La Salle had officially placed under protest the Archers’ recent loss to fierce rival Ateneo Blue Eagles in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s basketball competition.

League officials vowed on Saturday to issue a “quick decision” over La Salle’s contention that Ateneo fielded foreign players Kirk Long and Zion Laterre at the same time in the Thursday showdown where the Eagles outlasted the Archers, 80-77, in overtime.

“Ateneo committed a violation of Rule # IX, the rule on no two foreigners playing at the same time,” La Salle noted in an official letter signed by Archers coach Franz Pumaren and endorsed by La Salle board representative Brother Bernard S. Oca, FSC.

UAAP Season 70: Ateneo 80 La Salle 77 OT

Norman Black gets his first ever victory over Franz Pumaren and La Salle.

Kirk Long is finally unveiled and the kid does not disappoint.  All out hustle, all business, extremely reliable.  Lots of potential. Shot 2 airballs in the first qtr but was clutch in the end.

Best banner:  SUSPENDED!  SUSPENDED! SUSPENDED!

La Salle had the full court press going the whole game.  Ballpark estimate:  effective only 5% of the time. Ateneo guards broke the press with ease. Result:  tired La Salle guards, had virtually nothing left when the overtime started.

Jai Reyes was brilliant offensively.  No longer one-dimensional, he used his quickness to get into the lane for short jumpers time and again.

Who wants to earn a million dollars per day?

Something to think about… According to Yahoo News/Reuters, Oprah earns an estimate of around $260million per year.  If we use a 365 day/ year computation, that's earning around $700,000 per day.  However, if we compute based on a five-day workweek, 52 weeks/yr x 5 days/wk = 260 days/year… she earns a million a day!!!

The article also included a list which breaks down star salaries by category: prime-time TV, daytime, cable and news with a partial listing below:

Overall TOP FIVE (all salaries are per year)

1.Oprah Winfrey ("The Oprah Winfrey Show"): $260 million

2.Simon Cowell ("American Idol"): $45 million

3.Judge Sheindlin ("Judge Judy"): $30 million

4.Katie Couric ("CBS Evening News Anchor"): $15 million

5.Zach Braff ("Scrubs"): $6.3 million

Angel Locsin leaves GMA 7

In an interview with Boy Abunda of The Buzz, Mr. Angel Colmenares (Angel Locsin's father) and Ms. Becky Aguila (her manager) confirmed that Angel will not be renewing her contract with GMA 7.   Her contract expired last March 31.  Angel has been with GMA 7 for five years, during which she has turned into one of GMA 7's prized talents.

According to Becky, they are still negotiating with ABS-CBN.   But from the looks of it, Angel is sure to transfer to the rival network.

On the other hand, Wilma Galvante, GMA 7's SVP for Entertainment, said during a phone interview with Showbiz Central's Pia Guanio and Richard Gutierrez, that's she's very disappointed and saddened by the events.  To quote, "We nurtured her, we made her the star that she is".

MSI 262 Laptop Review

I am now 7 months into using this white MSi 262 Core 2 Duo Laptop, and it's time for a review.

Way back, Sony was written  to have aped MAC's Design with this model:

Well, Sony came up with this model

And eventually, the mix of those two designs bred the MSI S262 design That you see Below:

Background on MSI

Computer nerds who know their motherboards know MSI to be the stable pick among other entrants.  Stable capacitors, intel chipset, etc., always made me pick MSI motherboards for my PC for many years now.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows released today

As early as 7 a.m. today (July 21,2007 Manila/Philippine Time), bookstores like National Bookstore and Fully Booked opened their doors to allow Harry Potter fans to buy the latest and last(?) book of J.K. Rowling's phenomenal series.

Fully Booked even called me up last night to tell me about their opening time.  What great customer service.  Their personnel are always willing and able to help me find the books I want.  I'm looking forward to visiting their new branch at Fort Bonifacio (Bonifacio High St. near Serendra.)

As of now, somebody somewhere may have already finished the book!!! I haven't picked up mine yet.  I am taking short naps this afternoon so that when I get to pick the book up tonight at Fully Booked, I can read and finish it in one sitting.Smile
