BARATak: Chronicles of Kunat ep.1

The sweetest taboo

Funny thing, this subject of money. It still ranks high, in my mind, on the list of “shh..-‘wag-natin pag-usapan-yan” categories; a last bastion of secrecy that probably supplants the most scandalous of tabloid chismis. Your more likely to hear the details of an ex-President’s thespian daughter slobbering over her pathetic failure in keeping men from leaving her bedside, but not about her collective endorsement figures. Or view some college hottie revealing her goods on the latest “(Fill in the blank of school, company or province) Scandal” but I doubt if she’ll share how much her monthly allowance is.

Iphone recessed earphone slot extension

The iPhone’s headphone jack is recessed into the iPhone’s body; third-party headphones with larger miniplugs won’t work with this recessed jack.

The solution is a headphone adapter that plugs into this recessed jack and then lets you use your headphones of choice. A number of vendors, including Belkin, Griffin Technology, and Shure have announced such adapters. The first one released was Belkin’s $11 Headphone Adapter for iPhone.

Fantasy NBA Retrospective

Heading off tomorrow for our annual fantasy NBA auction draft.  This will be the 14th year and its' quite amazing that we've been able to sustain it for this long with the number of participants still at a healthy 12-14 people every year.

I remember it was 1994 when a bunch of us former high school buddies/hoops freaks got hold of a copy of Rotisserie League Basketball which was basically a rulebook and guide on how to play fantasy basketball.  To cut to the chase, we were awed/thrilled/excited by the whole concept and started a league of our own.  Instead of the snake draft, we chose to use the auction draft as it offered infinitely more possibilities for strategizing, was more equitable, and provided a chance for us to hold a mini-reunion every year.  We've tried the various formats such as head-to-head, and snake drafts on the side, but always kept the auction type — nothing beats it in terms of a true fantasy league experience.  The top $$ guys then were David Robinson, Shaq, Grant Hill, Akeem, Tim Duncan and Penny Hardaway;  among them only Duncan commands more than $60 nowadays.

ZTE Broadband Deal, Alleged Bribery in Malacanang and now, Glorietta 2 bombed!

Earlier today, I heard over the radio that the Makati Business Club expressed concern over the numerous scandals that have remained unexplained and unresolved by Malacanang.  In the same radio report, the Makati Business Club was afraid that a coup de etat might occur.  And then this afternoon, a bomb exploded in Glorietta 2.  Eight people are dead while around 80 others are wounded.  At first the police thought an LPG tank exploded but later said it was most probably caused by a bomb.  Do the Makati businessmen know something we don't? Or was the blast a reaction to the statement they gave?

President GMA has ordered the PAGC (Philippine Anti-Graft Commission) to look into the alleged bribery and cash giving in Malacanang.  Up to now, no report has come out.  Its not really that hard to investigate, right?  If Malacanang has a video security system then it should have recorded who handed out these bags.  And it should be able to show who brought in those bags as well.  Wait, maybe Malacanang, the highest seat of power in the land, has no video surveillance installed?  In ABS-CBN's news report by Ricky Carandang, he showed video footage of congressmen/mayors/governors leaving the palace holding the same gift bag as the one shown by Gov. Panlilio.  These men are seen holding the bags while boarding their cars.

Secondly, the cash in bundles of P1,000 have bank markers.  When one withdraws cash from the bank, the cash is wrapped and tagged by the tellers.  They have signatures, stamps, dates on the paper used to wrap the cash.  It won't be hard to tag which bank released the cash.  And it won't be hard to get the bank video footage to see who withdrew the cash.  A little CSI-like thinking will easily solve the mystery.

But I think the Filipino citizens are tired of all these issues… they are also tired of taking it to the streets… all we do is just talk about it and then move on to the next issue.  No action at all!  Changing presidents will not resolve graft and corruption.  I envy Singapore for having found a patriotic and just leader in Mr. Lee Kuan Yew.  I wonder when (or if?)  we will ever be gifted with such a leader?  The Philippines is such a beautiful country with bountiful natural resources.  And Filipinos are warm and kind.  Remember the Reader's Digest experiment where we got the highest rating for returning "intentionally lost" cellphone?  Tsk, tsk… the country is being pulled down by just a handful of corrupt personalities in the government and public service.  If only they had a little bit of conscience, then maybe there won't be so many poor people around who turn to crime just to have food to eat.  And what a great country we can finally become.
