Seven MTG Mathchievers outwit Asian Contenders in 2nd Hua Luo Geng Mathematics Elites Invitational Competition in Beijing, China

From: MTG Philippines

It’s another homerun for the Filipino kids who went to meet the challenge in the 2nd Hua Luo Geng Mathematics Elites Invitational Competition held in Beijing, China on July 16-20, 2008 which was participated in by no less than 259 math-gifted children from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore and the Philippines.

This math competition had been conducted for the second time in honor and acknowledgment to the great contribution of the outstanding Chinese Mathematician, Hua Luogeng (Hua Loo-Keng). He was the founder and pioneer of many fields in new China's mathematics research. He wrote more than 200 theses and monographs, many of which have become classic documents of immortal value. Besides pure mathematics, Hua also did a lot of work in the fields of mathematics applications. He made the mathematics serve the national economy and became the first Chinese scientist who closely combined the mathematics theoretic studies and practical production, and obtained enormous economic results in many fields.

Mac Baracael and an Amazing UE vs FEU Game

It's all over the news — FEU forward and leader Mac Baracael was shot from behind last Thursday and is now in the ICU but fortunately in stable condition. The suspect is still at large and it's difficult to speculate on the motives for this brazen attack, all we can do is pray and hope that this young man recovers from this, physically and emotionally.

More details on the shooting

Theories from police

GMA news video

Meanwhile, the rest of the FEU Tamaraws, the FEU community, and even the whole UAAP community, remain in shock over this crime but the games went on this afternoon.  Understandably, the games took a back seat to the shooting incident, giving everyone a jolt and shift in perspective.  The Tamaraws would have been forgiven if they played flat against UE, especially in the light of the emotionally draining past 48 hours for them.  But the game was a blockbuster, arguably one of the best played matches of the season so far.

Philippine and global gas pump prices compared

Every time local pump prices rose, we would hear the ocassional "be thankful, other countries are paying more".  That doesn't seem to be true compared to all countries.

A reuters report by July 21 states that the decline of more than 12 percent in crude oil prices last week shaved about 1 percent from prices at the pump as consumers paid less for gasoline and diesel fuel. The national price for regular, self-service gasoline declined almost a nickel over the last week to $4.06 a gallon, according to the federal Energy Information Administration's survey of service stations.

Each gallon is measured at 3.78 liters, as per Philippine pump measurement.  This translates into only 46.7 Pesos paid per liter in America, compared to our current outlay of 57 to 60 pesos for diesel or gasoline with different octane levels.

P1 (PISO) Shortage

Do you know that there's a shortage of P1 coins in our banks?  I wonder what's causing this shortage.  A bank officer told me that they think that the coins are being melted for its nickel content.  Even the P0.25 coins are hard to get these days.  And then there's the fake P5 coins going around.  The fake P5 coin is metallic and is attracted to magnet.  A friend in the bank I transact with told me that once they received a deposit of around P20,000 worth of fake P5 coins!!!  Fortunately, the bank operations officer was astute enough to check each and every P5 coin they receive.
