Bayantel dsl upgrade speed to 2.5mbps good news!

*after further scrutiny, it seems the errant bayantel guy that told me about the upgrade was all wrong and there will be no upgrade at all. tsk tsk tsk.

Good news to all Bayantel subscribers! Their basic 899 plan which initially provided 768 kbps to subscribers is due for an upgrade. According to a source, they already got the memo stating the speed upgrade to 2.5 mbps will begin June 1, 2009!

Whoopee! The floodgates are opened again.  Next will be PLDT and Globe to join the competition!

Thin Laptop showdown: MACbook air vs msi x slim vs Acer thin n light

Coming from those heavy Moses commandment tablet type 15" laptops from a couple of years ago, netbooks weighing at 1.3kgs were a sigh of relief.

But workability in terms of processing power, keyboard comfort, eye comfort from the small screen were the big drawbacks.  Come Macbook air's rivals msi x slim 340 and Acer thin and slim, plus HP's version coming out in the fourth quarter, I see the shift of laptop usage coming back to the 13.5" and above as they weigh the same and goes back to the original laptop power and performance.

MSI X SLIM:

New Zealand runaway millionaires Westpac bank boo boo

An international manhunt is underway for a New Zealand couple who have allegedly fled the country after a banking blunder accidently landed nearly $8 million in their account.

The couple, who ran Rotorua's BP Barnetts service station on Old Taupo Road, are Leo Gao and Australian girlfriend Cara Young.

The runaway millionaires are understood to have received the $7.8million windfall after applying for a $NZ10,000 business overdraft, according to local reports.

Speculation is rife among residents in the North Island town of Rotorua, that a recently closed local BP service station is at the centre of the Westpac slip up.

The money's disappearance is believed to be connected to a Rotorua BP service station, part-owned by one of the missing couple, which went into receivership on May 8.

3 Philippine universities make top 100 in QS Study

Although not in the top 10, 3 Philippine universities make the top 100 overall Asian Universities.

Leading the Philippine schools was the University of the Philippines (UP), which shared No. 63 spot with Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee of India, Osaka City University of Japan and Universitas Gadjah Mada of Indonesia. De La Salle University (DLSU) was 76th, Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) was 84th, while the University of Santo Tomas (UST) shared 144th spot with Nanjing Agricultural University of China.  This ranking of UST fits in the top 200 category.

Managing Director Nunzio Quacquarelli said the results of the Asian University Rankings focus on regionally relevant measures of excellence, with the top performing universities distinguished not only by quality, but also by high productivity of research, compared to their regional peers.

Teachers and government workers get payhike

Much publicized last week was the P6,500 pay hike for the teachers which was proposed and set to be heard by the House Chambers and signed by the President before it is finally enacted into law.

High-ranking bureaucrats such as undersecretaries, assistant secretaries and directors will get an increase of 100 percent of their basic pay, excluding allowances, he said.

Unlike teachers, he said these officials receive additional compensation in the form of fat allowances.

Padilla proposed that teachers who hold salary grade 10 under the 33-grade government compensation scheme should be adjusted to grade 15 with a monthly salary of P24,878.

Rodriguez, on the other hand, took up the cudgels for the more than 100,000 soldiers.

Piratebay verdict backlash Mininova begins filtering copyrighted torrents

One month ago today, Pirate Bay's four co-founders were sentenced to one year in prison and a $905,000  fine each. They will appeal, but the consortium of 17 media and music companies behind the prosecution will be crowing over their victory for years.

The repercussions are now being felt as leading torrent index mininova.org has already acted on this with arrangement from copyright holders to block and filter torrents.

This is a sad thing for people who use Mininova as an index of choice every since suprnova went down back in 03 or o4.  As an alternative, Tribler has been doing very good work with decentralized torrent searches and with this their is no need for torrent indexers such as mininova and the pirate bay.

Much Brouhaha over Martin Nievera’s rendition of National Anthem

Well, his version of our National Anthem last week had no slip ups, and I was surprised The National Historical Institute (NHI) still had something critical to say this time.  The NHI have always been critical of the singing of the anthem during international events that were aired on TV and radio. They also criticized the renditions of singers Sarah Geronimo, Kyla, Lani Misalucha and Bituin Escalante in the past.

“Despite repeated reminders, some artists continue to make adjustments to the anthem, which is not an ordinary piece of music open to free interpretation,” NHI chairman Ambeth Ocampo reportedly said.
