For lack of apparent reason, Madoff's sentencing to 150 years in prison was attributed to wall street's rally last night.

Locally, people expecting an uptick due to window dressing were very much disappointed.  Heck, people expecting an uptick due to wall street's rally were also very disappointed.

The sell on rally theme was still very much prevalent, and some fund managers could probably not wait to sell any rally there is.  In my article last year, I surmised that the term window dressing does not necessarily mean up.  It may also mean beautifying or dressing up your portfolio by getting rid of ugly stocks.  In this case, Philippine stocks, as it was apparent with today's unexpected selloff.

With lack of fresh leads except for the much ignored better than expected consumer sentiment report in the u.s., the Psei follows fall street in fluttering about then closing slightly lower.  Much of asia also almost 1% down by the close.

All 30 stocks (32 if you count the B shares of LCB SMCB) made insignificant 1 or at most 2 fluctuation moves in either direction.  Only the extreme index decliner AC that lost 7.50 to 277.50 had a big impact of 5 psei points lost, plus extreme index gainer TEL that gained only 10 pesos but due to its heavy index weighting, contributed 2.8 gained psei points.

Who will inherit Michael Jackson’s estate?

Now that the King of Pop is dead, where will all his estate go?  Will there be anything left after settling debts?  In the first place, will debts have to be settled at all?

Michael Jackson reportedly planned to end his longstanding feud with Paul McCartney by leaving him the Beatles' back catalog in his will last January 2009.  It is not known if this was finalized before the time of his death. Jacko and Macca have been estranged since a falling out back in 1985, after Jackson beat out McCartney and Yoko Ono — widow of John Lennon — in a bidding war for the rights to 200 of Fab Four's legendary songs.

How much was Michael Jackson’s net worth at the time of his death?

Michael’s empire was worth over $2 billion gross at the height of his career. This included royalties from his own album, plus Beatles album catalog.  However, much of this was spent on extravagant whims.

  • Mr. Jackson was the Sony's partner in a lucrative music publishing business that included songs by the Beatles and other musicians. Jackson owned 50 percent share of that $1 billion business.
  • Album sales of Bad (1989 @$125million), Dangerous (1992 @$67 million), HIStory (1996 @$55 million) and BOTDF (1998 @$12million)
  • Michael Jackson was once worth $2.3 billion dollars gross of debts. At his time of death he was only worth a few million!

How much did Michael Jackson spend

The tale is all too familiar.  Sudden fame and fortune, well for Michael Jackson, gradual steady ascent to fame and fortune lead to awry spending for well known stars and athletes.

Here are some of Michael Jackson’s spending habits:

  • $9,000-a-night luxury suite in the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai
  • Sales of his recordings through Sony's music unit have generated more than $300 million in royalties for Mr. Jackson since the early 1980's, according to three individuals with direct knowledge of the singer's business affairs….but
  • Michael Jackson borrowed $300 million from Sony to pay off his debts

Wall street futures dove and opened lower after weekly jobless claims came in higher than expected but quickly rebounded and closed over 2% higher.

Local stocks took the opposite route and opened much higher before closing at a level where its 30 point gain were almost wiped out.

This only justifies the "sell on rally case" until further notice.

Index stocks that rallied were limited to one fluctuation gains at the average, with more than half either losing a little or trading flat by the close.

Better-than-expected durable-goods report coupled with worse than expected Housing data made for a strong opening in wall street.  Their Dow Industrials failed to hold on to a 100 point gain, and closed down 23.

Locally, two leaders joined forces to drive up the index.  TEL's 60 peso climb to 2375 was worth 16.7 psei points, while MER'S 8 peso gain to 145 was worth 9.4 gained index points.  TEL swings to 121m nfb, but MER had 17m pesos nfs.

Net foreign activity was not that lop sided this time around, with the favor tilting slightly over the buying side.  Aside from TEL, bulk of the NFB came from EDC 121M, GLO 49M.

U.S. home prices continue to soften but existing U.S. home sales increased
2.4% in May. The Federal Reserve also ends tonight a two day meeting on what to do with interest rates. It is widely believed they will leave it unchanged.

Local equities close near the high, 2415.  This is also very near the 50% retracement resistance level of 2420 as explained yesterday.  Strangely enough, 2420 is quite near the 2425 previous support.  This is what is called a pivot point, where previous support now becomes resistance.

Clear breakaway leader from the index stocks was MER's 13 peso climb to 137, worth 15 psei points.  Mer had 6m NFS by the close.
