The Dow crossed zero 108 times in last night's session, ending a futures optimism on Alcoa "better than expected loss reports" on a flat note.Initial jobless claims plunged by 52,000 last week to a much lower-than-expected 565,000. It was the lowest reading since January, and psychologically important because claims have finally dropped below 600,000.

Additional confusing mix to the data was provided by the lower-than-expected retail sales in June.

For local equities, it was a usual day at the office, where a strong spurt in early trading gave way to more quiet and profit taking, only to resume a last few minute marking the close technique.

540M pesos of today's total traded stocks came from TEL, of which comprised 111m nfb.  This 20 peso gain to 2345 gave the psei a 6.7 point boost.

MER only came in second amongst the index gainers this time around, hitting a wall at 180, and closing at 179, now on 24m nfb.

Just a few index losers this time: JGS RLC GLO DMC BDO BPI AC, each shedding 1 fluctuation.

Of yesterday's thirdliner superstars, ORE went up to .92 before settling at .80, still higher from yesterday.  AGI made a 10% gain to 3.3 on 15m nfb, mostly from broker macquarie.

The new .25 rate cut on interest rates yesterday did not propel properties higher that much today.

It was the usual story for yoyo trios EDC FPH FGEN, that shot up a few, then closed back almost unchanged.
