How much do Philippine government officials make in salary?

For all the headaches a government official is embracing upon being elected into office, did you ever wonder how much they make in a month?  Why spend hundreds of millions for only a yearly salary not exceeding 1 million pesos for the top post of President of the archipelago?

Does that mean they all steal?  Or all for the service of the country? Sense of nationalism? "Give something back to the country"?  And yet some senators are so pompous and arrogant at shouting at citizens in their blue ribbon inquiries, forgetting that they are there at the service of the Filipino people.  Anyway…….. here are their salaries as of 2001.

The table below from siquijor.com shows the salary schedule for government employees effective July 1, 2001. With the exception of the president, each position pays a range of salaries from Step 1 being the entry-level amount to Step 8 as the highest amount a particular position can get. The table only shows Step 1 and Step 8 for comparison purposes. The listings are not in any particular order.

Well, these are their official salaries only.  The benefits must be good.

  1. It’s the perks. You get access to a lot of things that can earn you a lot of money. Most of them legal. For the doctors:

There was a salary increase effective last July. Physicians get Php 22,000.00 both in health centers and government hospitals minimum. There are levels that as you go high up, it increases. There is also Philhealth charging and perks. Some do resort to inserting bogus charges as instrument fees and the like. But there are surgeons in government hospitals who earn 100,000+ minimum monthly.

As for the senators and other officials, I noticed a Micheal Defensor as one of those that bought shares of Nihao at 1 peso per share (is he the same guy as the politician?). I also noted some prominent previous government officials on the top100s of other companies. As I understand some of the IPOs are offered first to institutional investors (like the government) which is why it is easy for this officials to get them cheap and get high positions.

As for plunder, I can’t say. Who would admit to that?

  3. tere says:

not only teachers…guess for all levels…salaries are quite low…better to work in a call center you get 12-18k per month average wise or teach english online for 4 hrs…you receive 10-17 k monthly…

  4. bluebook says:

I guess this speaks of the salary they receive on paper. I’m absolutely certain that senators such as Manny Villar have learned of more creative ways to make money. Enough to convince Loren to run as his vice president this coming elections.
