Wall street falters following disappointing results from computer-maker Dell and homebuilder D.R. Horton, then recovers by the close, setting the stage for Asia's rally today.
On the local scene, early attempts of MER to sustain 230 was met with failure, as its 221 close dragged down the index by 8 points. On the other hand, PX returns to 18.25 which buffered the fall with 6 gained psei points.
Other slight index gainers were JGS ABS GLO SMC/B FGEN. About 1/3 of the other index stocks that fell slightly were: ALI BPI AC AEV EDC. EDC's dividends become sellable today, hence adding to the reason for selling.
Top overall gainers include JOH 2.46, VITA .32, NI 6.90, SOC 1.96, I 6.50, SMDC 4.30, CPM 5.80, LIHC 11.25. Top losers were ISM .06, WEB 17, UPM .08, IS .085.
With banks faltering, AC ALI MEG SMPH getting weak foreign appetite, any rally might be sold off in the short term.
PESO trades briefly above 47 but is now at the high 46s. Crude oil lingers at the $76 while gold rallies further past 1160.
