Can you jailbreak a handheld device like the Samsung GalaxyNote 2 running on Android Jelly Bean Firmware? You certainly can, but with android devices, it is called rooting, and is perfectly legal.
How do you know what Galaxy Note 2 version you have? There are at least 3! Open your Galaxy Note 2, press settings, scroll down to ‘About Device’, and you’ll see an option labelled Model number. If it’s T-Mobile SGH-T889, you’re good to go for the steps on this page.
WHAT IS NEEDED
Before we begin with rooting/jailbreaking, simply download the following packages:
- Download the rooting code CF-Auto-Root-SGH-T889 by Chainfire (CF-Auto-Root-t0ltetmo-sght889.zip , 12.2 MB for the T-Mobile SGH-T889 variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 SGH-T889 Android version.
- Download Odin3-v1.85 (Odin3-v1.85.zip, 203KB)
- Samsung Galaxy Note 2 USB drivers for Windows, if you are running Windows, or the drivers for Mac or Linux if you are running those. Install the drivers if you haven’t installed them already
- Make sure that your phone battery holds at least 70 to 85 percent charge to avoid unexpected device shutdown while flashing the ROMs or rooting the Jelly Bean firmware.

How to Root / Jailbreak Samsung Galaxy Note 2
Step 1: This is actually downloading the four files above and preparing them for use: Galaxy Note 2 GT N7100 rooting code, Odin 3.04, Samsung USB Driver.
Step 2: Check to see that USB debugging (under Settings -> Developer options) is enabled in your phone, then turn Off your phone and just remove and reinsert the battery
Step 3: you’ll want to allow your phone to install non-Google Play apps, and run debugging mode when connected via USB. On your Note 2, select Settings > Security, and you just have to scroll down to Device Administration and tick ‘Unknown sources’ in the menu
Step 4: Run the ODIN application on your PC which you downloaded in step 1.
Step 5: Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable. If you have completed the above steps the Odin window will show that the device has been detected otherwise it will not respond, and you will have to redo since Step 1.

Step 6: When Odin has been activated, make sure that ‘Auto Reboot’ and ‘Reset Time’ are ticked. Also make sure the Repartition option is not checked under Options. Once your phone is recognized, click on the PDA button and select the CF-Auto-Root-t0ltetmo-sght889.tar.
Step 7: Click Start button to flash CF-Auto-Root-t0ltetmo-sght889.tar on your Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The progress can be observed via Odin User Interface.
Step 8: Once the flashing is completed, a green “PASS” message will be shown to indicate the flashing is successful.
Step 9: Disconnect your phone now and your phone shall reboot automatically into Modified Red Android Recovery mode. The rooting will continue to install SuperSU and your phone shall reboot again into normal mode after the rooting is successful.
Step 10: Your T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 2 SGH-T889 has been successfully rooted and with Stock Recovery installed.
