2009 NBA Fantasy Midseason Roundup

As we near the 2009 All Star break, it seems that the dreaded "out for the season" update has come up more times than most fantasy owners want.

The major players shelved for the year who could swing the rankings by their absence alone are Elton Brand, Michael Redd, Al Jefferson, and Gilbert Arenas (most likely done). There are more who, despite estimates of 4-8 weeks out, will probably no longer have any impact on the standings. The length of time away plus the expected recovery and burn in period should make fantasy owners look for other options asap. Players who fall under this catefory are Andrew Bynum, Andrew Bogut (must be the initials!), Carlos Boozer, Andrei Kirilenko (must be the Jazz!), and Jameer Nelson.

UAAP Season 71 Finals Schedule: Ateneo vs. La Salle

It's on! The most anticipated matchup has materialized and rabid blue and green followers can't wait 'till gametime Sunday.  Studio 23, Adidas, and the other sponsors must all be licking their chops at this marketing bonanza, especially in the light of all the negative economic developments in recent days.

For Ateneans, the 6 year wait has been long enough, and 2008 hopefully will culminate in another title.  In the interim years, there have been finals appearances, long winning streaks, but no crown and definitely none of the extreme confidence, focus and defensive discipline that this year's team has shown from the very first game of the season.  Pardon the Blue Eagle faithful for being giddy and getting ahead of ourselves, all that devotion and loyalty (cheering through losses, NU and Adamson games, paying scalper prices, etc.) will seem to be finally rewarded, though we ask not for it ;)

Ateneo Blue Eagles’ Chris Tiu: Will this be the year?

Six years waiting seems far too long for someone who has the world in the palm of his hands. Nonetheless, Chris Tiu has put in the time, endured the harsh criticisms (remember that momentum breaking missed wide open layup against DLSU in his sophomore year?), and deferred long enough to senior Eagles in years past (from Fonacier to Tenorio to the Macky-Doug-JC troika).  And make no mistake, he has come back to play for the Blue and White for a 5th and final year because he wants that championship in the worst way possible.  Over the last three years, he has established himself as one of the all time greatest clutch performers in Ateneo, if not UAAP history.

2008 Beijing Olympics Solar Sports TV Schedule

The coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics begins tonight with a live broadcast of the opening ceremonies on Solar Sports.  The event will begin at 8pm, as the organizers made it a point to start this year's Olympics at 8/8/08 at 8pm Smile

All eyes are on Beijing as the hosts have made no qualms about making this the biggest, if not the best, version of the quadrennial games.  So many subplots abound, however, from world politics, world economy, the doping controversy, etc.  But of course, its the games that matter for now.

The Blue Eagles: After the 1st Round

Amazing how things fall into place – after Ateneo absorbed its first defeat at the hands of an inspired FEU team, they dropped into a triple tie for first with DLSU and FEU at 5-1.  But in last weekend's games, La Salle fell to UE and FEU got blindsided by NU, while Ateneo got back on track by beating UST.  So as the first round ended, Ateneo was solo 1st place at 6-1 with FEU and DLSU breathing down their necks at 5-2 apiece.

The first round involved a lot of experimentation for Coach Norman Black and his assistants, what with four rookies blending in, and the 6 wins were a welcome bonus; most pundits picked Ateneo to finish 4th or 5th.

Mac Baracael and an Amazing UE vs FEU Game

It's all over the news — FEU forward and leader Mac Baracael was shot from behind last Thursday and is now in the ICU but fortunately in stable condition. The suspect is still at large and it's difficult to speculate on the motives for this brazen attack, all we can do is pray and hope that this young man recovers from this, physically and emotionally.

Meanwhile, the rest of the FEU Tamaraws, the FEU community, and even the whole UAAP community, remain in shock over this crime but the games went on this afternoon.  Understandably, the games took a back seat to the shooting incident, giving everyone a jolt and shift in perspective.  The Tamaraws would have been forgiven if they played flat against UE, especially in the light of the emotionally draining past 48 hours for them.  But the game was a blockbuster, arguably one of the best played matches of the season so far.
