Samar to have country’s first ‘show cave’

TACLOBAN CITY -- Sohoton Cave in Basey, Samar is all set to be the first show cave in the country complete with lights and trail setup.

Karina Rosa S. Tiopes, Department of Tourism regional director for Eastern Visayas, said the government has released P5 million for the project.

"We will have the first ever show cave in the Philippines. This will be a pilot project in the country," Ms. Tiopes said.

She said Tourism Secretary Joseph "Ace" H. Durano has committed to prioritize the Sohoton Cave improvement.

"I am sure he will consider the setting up of trail and lights inside the cave first. We will start this in February or March and it will take two to three months to complete," Ms. Tiopes said.

Lights will be installed in the cave so guests can appreciate the rock formations while the trail will prevent visitors from touching the stalagmites, stalactites, cave walls and formations.

The wood needed for the trail will be sourced from confiscated logs by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Ms. Tiopes said.

"The path is one that every visitor should follow. This is to minimize disturbance of cave formations. People can’t stop [themselves] from touching the formations even if it’s not allowed," she explained.

The water that drips from the cave ceiling forms one square inch of stalagmite in a span of 100 years. Some visitors have accidentally stepped on these formations.

Experts, meanwhile, say that oil smears from human skin are like graffiti that could ruin the natural "growth" of the rocks and cause them to turn brown or black, Ms. Tiopes said.

Cave exploration in Sohoton is safe because it doesn’t involve climbing or descending, just continuous walking on mostly level ground...

For years, Basey’s Sohoton caves have been part of an 840-hectare forest area that was declared a national park in 1935. The caves have drawn tourists, hobbyists, researchers and even treasure hunters.

The park boasts of natural wonders like waterfalls, underground streams and caves with unique rock formations aside from a lush forest and wildlife species.

Panagbenga kicks off on Monday
By DEXTER A. SEE
January 31, 2010, 5:51pm
http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/241224/pa ... cks-monday

BAGUIO CITY – Local and foreign tourists will start flocking to this mountain resort city to witness the colorful activities of the 15th Panagbenga, the famous Baguio flower festival which fires off on Monday with the elimination round of the street dancing competition.

Aside from the street dancing elimination, organizers will also unveil Monday for public viewing the Market Encounter at Burnham Park which features world-class floral arrangers displaying their respective flower-based products and other landscaping techniques at the park.

At least 50 elementary and secondary schools in the city will compete in the whole day affair to determine the finalists to the street dancing competition. Other street dancers from different parts of Luzon will also join the contest during the finals.

Other highlights of the annual Panagbenga include the fluvial parade at the Burnham Park lake on February 14, Valentines Day; the street dancing parade on February 27; the float and marching bands competition on February 28; and the Session Road in Bloom.

The Session Road in Bloom from March 1 to 7 will see the city’s main road closed to vehicular traffic for the benefit of promenaders, with matching sidewalk cafes and display of flower-based products.

Panagbenga is a Kankanaey term for the blossoming of flowers. It was adapted by Rep. Mauricio G. Domogan when he was still the city’s local chief executive to name the festival since the months of February and March are the times of year when flowers in Baguio and Benguet are in full bloom.

Local hotel owners in Baguio and Benguet said their establishments are close to being fully booked towards the middle of the month due to the increasing reservations from tourists who want to witness the city’s premier crowd drawing event...

Participants to the float parade need to spend at least P400,000 each in order to come out with a competitive float which is expected to contribute to the uplift of the local flower industry that was heavily devastated by the onslaught of Typhoon Pepeng late last year.

The annual Panagbenga is spearheaded by the Baguio Flower Festival Foundation Inc., a private organization established to cater to the organization and implementation of the activities for the event.

Cagayan’s pristine islands eyed as Boracay of the North
Wednesday, 03 February 2010 00:00
BY FRANCIS C. HIDALGO JR. Correspondent
http://www.manilatimes.net/index.php/ne ... -the-north

TUGUEGARAO CITY: Cagayan’s still unexplored Babuyan group of is lands has all the potentials to be one of the country’s leading tourism destinations at par, or could even surpass, more known tourism sites, including Aklan’s much touted Boracay beaches.

According to Cagayan’s economic consultant Juan “Jack” Ponce Enrile Jr., the Babuyan islands in the South China Sea-Pacific Ocean coastlines are the province’s “sleeping giants” in terms of tourism potentials, and that their development would surely accelerate economic boom in the country’s northernmost areas.

“Tourism should stimulate regional economies. We have the best to offer for tourists from China. These are one of Cagayan’s best kept secrets and [we] should take advantage of [our province’s] proximity to Asia’s tiger economies,” said Enrile, who is a former three-term representative of Cagayan’s first congressional district, which covers Babuyan group of islands.

Known for its pristine forest and white-sand beaches, the Babuyan islands include Calayan, Camiguin, Dalupiri, Babuyan Claro and Fuga.

“White sand dominates Fuga island, reputed to be the most beautiful of them all, while the other islands all have great beaches,” said Enrile.

The full opening of the China-Asean Free Trade Area (CAFTA) that started on January 1, Enrile said, is expected, among other things, to boost tourism and economic development not only in Cagayan but in the entire Northern Luzon area, considering that “China and Asean will become the world’s largest free
trade area.”...

“In terms of proximity, Cagayan Valley is the nearest to the huge market of affluent and young Chinese who are looking for new tourist destinations,” he said, adding that the region “has a lot to offer, in terms of reduced travel time and cost, the eco-tourism we have as well as our excellent resorts and state-of-the-art facilities.”

Besides the Babuyan islands, white beaches, underwater sports, rugged cliffs, spectacular rock formations, series of pristine waterfalls also await at Palaui Island in northernmost Santa Ana town, where it based the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA), the country’s fastest-growing industrial, logistics, tourism and investment hub.

“We are at the forefront of this window of opportunity as we have the geographic edge, being the northernmost point of the country and thus the nearest to China,” said Enrile.

Under the CAFTA, Enrile said, the Philippines, especially Cagayan is expected to tap into tourism, business services, electronics, agricultural produce, fruits, fishery products and minerals, English teaching, eco-medical and retirement care services.

Palawan in China’s top spots for elite travellers
Posted on February 7th, 2010
http://goodnewspilipinas.com/?p=10316

Palawan, the country’s renowned ecotourism site, is once again hailed as among the top 10 best destinations for elite travelers in China. Initiated by Ctrip.com, China’s leading and trusted online travel agency, and popular high-end travel glossy Elite Traveller, the polling for top overseas destinations of 2009 gathered a total of 4,340,122 valid votes through www.ctrip.com, emails, fax, and snail mail.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano noted, “Receiving this recognition for one of our carefully protected eco-tourism sites is indeed a great milestone ushering for more positive news in tourism at the onset of the year.”

Reaffirming the distinction of being a most sought-after destination for the Chinese market, the country continues to pride itself with natural wonders and eco-tourism sites. The Palawan Underground River has also been continually in the top list of the New7Wonders of Nature online poll, and is now officially the country’s bet for the final stage which will be held in 2011.

“More than promoting our destinations to travelers, we aim to raise awareness on the preservation and protection of our natural wonders through responsible travel,” said Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque, Jr.

The list of 10 Top destinations include the Pyramids of Egypt; the Gold Coast of Australia; Masai Mara in Kenya; Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand, the cosmopolitan city of Paris, France; Jungfrau in Switzerland; beach destination Maldives; Disney World in Orlando World, USA, and Bali Island in Indonesia.

Representatives and travel agencies from more than 30 countries and regions were present at the grand awarding ceremonies held in the Radisson Plaza Xing Guo Hotel in Shanghai, China.

Accepting the award was Gerry Panga, Tourism Attaché for DOT Shanghai. “We are pressed to maintain the Philippines’ position as one of the most sought-after travel destinations in the world, through our intensified our marketing programs to promote our country’s treasures to the nature-loving Chinese travelers.”

China remains the country’s third largest source market for tourists.

For the adventurous...

There’s more to Benguet than Baguio, says tourism group
By Izah Morales
INQUIRER.net
First Posted 20:03:00 02/08/2010
http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingne ... rism-group

MANILA, Philippines – Local tourism officials are making effort to sell Benguet province as a destination for adventure seekers, hoping to attract vacationers into expanding their itinerary and visiting places outside of Baguio City...

“Today’s generation wants more adventure-related activities,” said BCVB executive director Amboy Guevara Jr. in a press briefing during the recent week-long Lakbay Norte (Travel North) media tour.

Guevara said that they are not only promoting Baguio City but its neighboring towns as well in Benguet province. “We’re making the playground bigger as we want to enhance the tourism of other sectors in Benguet,” he said.

He is referring to the surrounding towns Bokod, Itogon, Tuba, Sablan, La Trinidad, and Tublay which now offers rappelling, kayaking, mountaineering, fishing, mountain biking, spelunking, trekking and river surfing.

Tourists can opt to start their Benguet adventure by playing a game airsoft in “battlegrounds” such as Camp 7 (Kennon Road) (near the Philippine Military Academy headquarters), Shaggy Park in La Trinidad and Crosby Park in Balatoc, Itogon.

La Trinidad is 25-45 minutes away from Baguio city proper while Itogon is less than an hour away.

Aside from playing airsoft in Itogon, tourists can also take the Balatoc Mines Tour, where they get to see how tunnels are dug and even witness a simulated explosion.

For motorsports enthusiasts who want to explore the rugged terrain of Benguet, ATV driving can be done in Wangal-Longlong in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Tuba, 45 minutes away from the city, is a site for rappelling, bouldering, and rock climbing.

The majestic Ambuklao Dam in Bokod, Benguet should also not be missed out. The dam is a picturesque sight especially if you get to catch the releasing of water flowing to the Agno River.

Paddlers can try the medium range open and whitewater kayaking in the dam, which is less than two hours away from Baguio.

The BCVB makes adventure tourism distinct by mixing style in rough activities through the service of the Baguio Country Club.

“The idea here is after kayaking, fishing, or rappelling, the guests are treated with cocktail drinks and fine-dining accompanied with chefs and butlers who serve the food,” said Guevara.

THE BALLOONS take flight in last years Hot Air Balloon Fiesta

A flying house and a humongous sun -- two of the special shapes for balloons the length and breadth of a six-storey building -- will soar at the 15th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in Clark, Pampanga from Feb. 11-14. Around 80,000 spectators -- up from last year’s 60,000 -- are expected, with at least 23 hot air balloons, and participants from the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom.

Touted as the biggest aviation event in Asia, the Balloon Fiesta attracts aviation enthusiasts drawn to the aerosports events, and families looking for weekend entertainment. One activity involving the air balloons is a "hare and hound" exercise, wherein a lead balloon takes off and all other air balloons try to get as close to it as they can, throwing down markers at their landing spot. The bigger the balloon, the more unwieldy it is, and usually smaller balloons are used for such activities.

"The special shapes are hard to control, hard to fly, hard to maneuver... If the wind is a little bit rough, we have to put the special shapes on the ground. The best condition would be almost no wind, early morning, cold air," said Captain Joy Roa, member of the organizing committee from the Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta Foundation and familiar to most as host of the TV program Asian Air Safari.

Apart from the balloon flights, there will be light airplane balloon bursting competitions, the AFP flag jump (with a rondalla on wheels), formation flying (and flour bombing), light airplane flyby, a rocketry demonstration and the aerobatic air show by Meynard Halili and Bill Wright.

The line-up also features innocuous activities such as kite-flying and radio-controlled model aircraft demo flying, as well as daredevil stunts such as skydiving and paragliding exhibitions by civilians and military alike. This year, there will also be a light airplane versus car race.

"A lot of people think we’re wasting money on fuel [during the Balloon Fiesta activities] -- no, it’s developing pilot’s skills. The young pilots will have a little more discipline, [will learn] how to fly properly, how to be safe in their flying, how to develop their motor skills, especially their visual skills. They use this to develop their skills in flying bigger aircrafts. For the balloonists, we’re a very good advertising medium... Can you imagine how many people took a photo of that balloon with your name on it?" Mr. Roa told BusinessWorld at the media launch held at R.O.X. in Bonifacio High Street.

In between aerosports activities or when not otherwise engaged, attendees can also tour the military displays of guns and military equipment, or join a ramp tour of the flying machines. Those who are serious about flying can also take flying lessons and have their first flight.

Barring bad weather, a lucky few civilians will be taken up on a hot air balloon and experience what natural flight is like, at 10 knots. The minimum fee is $150 (a fraction of the expenses for the pilot’s fees, and meals and transportation for the chase crew) for a 45-minute flight on a first come-first served basis.

All proceeds from ticket sales and flights, Mr. Roa assured, will go back into the operation and the foundation. Beneficiaries of the Balloon Fiesta and Asian Air Safari are high school students who are interested in aviation careers but are without the funds for their schooling. Currently, there are six scholars enrolled in different schools, five of whom are graduating this March.

Originally a tourism initiative, the Balloon Fiesta was taken over five years ago by aviation enthusiasts and professionals with an eye to developing interest in the languishing aviation industry. Mr. Roa divulged that it has only been in the past three years, when sponsors came in, that the event started generating funds for the foundation.

"First, we want to open everybody’s eyes to the possibilities of aviation. Second, we like to get young kids started in aviation and start up a career. In our industry right now, majority of the people are retired, getting old, they don’t want to make any changes in the system... These kids that take aviation as a career, start up really young, get themselves educated, and think of something for the development of aviation," said Mr. Roa.

Tickets to the event are available at the gate and in all TicketNet outlets. For more information, visit www.philballoonfest.net or call 0927-340-4994. -- Johanna D. Poblete

Ganda pala dito. I can't copy/paste the beautiful pics, so click the link nalang... :P

Travel diaries: Pinatubo Virgins
By Korina Iledan, ABS-CBN News | 03/07/2010 1:04 AM
http://abs-cbnnews.com/lifestyle/03/06/ ... bo-virgins

We were in Mabalacat, Pampanga -- on our way to the now-famous crater of Mt. Pinatubo...

It wasn't exactly a comfortable ride. But hey, a couple of bumps and bruises won't stop us from what lay ahead -- the magnificence of the Pinatubo Lake.

Touching base

After an hour’s drive, we were finally at our first pitstop -- the part where we began our trek...

It was a sunny day but we all donned our sweaters when we felt the cold breeze, which was probably a sign that we were already halfway up Mt. Pinatubo...

Not wanting to delay our date with the Pinatubo Lake, we charged on ahead...

We stopped every few minutes to rest and to admire the tranquillity of the place -- the sound of a stream flowing nearby, the birds chirping, the leaves of the trees rustling with every breeze...

Destination: paradise.

We were ready to plop down, but the sight of the green Pinatubo lake caught our breath. It was there, just below us, shimmering and beckoning us to take a refreshing dip.

Hot and cold

I couldn't believe that such beauty existed within a mountain that once caused devastation to the Filipino people.

The sun shone on the waters, causing it to glimmer in different shades of green and aquamarine.

The mere sight re-energized us. We raced towards the lake and practically jumped on the boats so we can get to the other side of the crater.

The Pinatubo Lake. Simply breathtaking.

... It took us roughly 10 minutes before we reached the other side. It felt like we were in a different world (think: Lord of the Rings).

When our small boat finally docked, something odd caught my eye -- heat bubbles popping in and out. The water seems to be boiling at the edge of the lake.

It was deceiving, really, because when we jumped into the water, it was freezing! We hit warm patches of water, but most of the time, we gritted our teeth in the cold...

Stragglers. Waiting for our ride back to civilization.

We wanted to explore the crater some more, but we were dead tired from all the trekking and the swimming. So we decided to wait for our boatman to come pick us up and take us to the other side.

We had to wait a good 20 minutes before we got our turn on one of the boats since there were a lot of visitors that day...

I began walking towards the path to civilization, but I stopped for a bit, looking back to take in the magnificence of the Pinatubo crater one more time...

"Ranked as among the best sailing destinations for competition or leisure"

Yacht racing series set in Subic Bay

It will be a sizzling summer at the Subic Bay Freeport as sailing enthusiasts set a series of sailing tournaments in its tranquil waters.

The sailing season kicked off last February 20-22 with the 210-nautical mile Subic to Boracay Regatta, one of the country’s longest and most challenging inter-island races.

This will be followed by the Great Zambales Yachting Challenge sails on March 13-14 from Subic Bay to the northern coast of Zambales passing through the idyllic Capones Island in San Antonio town.

The highlight of the sailing events is the inaugural of the Commodore’s Cup Regatta slated on April 6 at the Subic Bay Yacht Club (SBYC). Immediately preceded by the 565-nautical mile Rolex China Sea Race from Hong Kong to Subic Bay, the Cup will draw international sailors of grand prix keelboats.

The regatta is part of the Asian Yachting Circuit which goes around Asia-Pacific’s best sailing sites.

“It should be noted that in these events, the Philippines, Subic Bay in particular, is ranked as among the best sailing destinations for competition or leisure,” says Jesus Avecilla Jr., skipper of the multi-awarded Team Selma Star/C! Calibre sailboat and a prime mover of sailing in Subic.

The 36-foot Selma Star/C! Calibre, the 2006 Beneteau cruiser racer yacht of The Lighthouse Marina Resort, won for three consecutive years top honors in the Borneo International Yachting Challenge which sailed in the Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah. It also won in the maiden voyage of the Singapore Straits Regatta in 2006, as well as in the Manila-Boracay race in 2006 and 2008.

“Aside from these established races, Subic Bay sailing community holds special races to celebrate national holidays such as Independence Day, Ninoy Aquino Day and National Heroes’ Day, to name a few,” he added.

Avecilla said that in addition to competitive racing, The Lighthouse Marina Resort offers sailing lessons and leisure cruises to make Subic Bay the country’s top sailing haven.

Has both coastlines and mountains...better climate than Baguio!

Mangoes are Zambales province’s top tourist draw
By VINCE G. LOPEZ
March 6, 2010, 11:08am
http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/246428/ma ... urist-draw

Iba, Zambales – One of Zambales’ famous delights are its sweet and luscious mangoes. Known for its incomparable taste that’s also beyond description, the Dinamulag variety is the most popular among Zambales mango varieties.

It is for this reason that the Zambales Mango Festival every first week of March, with these luscious tropical fruit in the center of the festivities, draws thousands of local and foreign tourists to this province located on the western coast of Central Luzon.

But Zambales’ Mango Festival is just the initial step in preparing the province in becoming one of the prime tourism spots in the country. Recognized in 1995 by the Guinness Book of World Records for having the sweetest mangoes in the world, Zambales also has interesting sites and activities for those lured by the smell and taste of its premier tropical fruit.

“Have you ever heard of Mt. Apulao? It’s more scenic and has a better climate than Baguio but has not been recognized because it doesn’t receive enough publicity and people don’t know about it,” said Zambales Governor Amor Deloso.

“Zambales is beautifully situated. It’s the only province located between the mountains and the sea. Other provinces just have long coastlines and some just have mountains. We have both,” Gov. Deloso added.

With an airport that’s set to open anytime soon, Zambales is indeed all set to become a premier destination in the country. The province is finding new ways of developing new sites to offer to tourists. At present, only 10 percent of the province’s natural wonders and beauty is being explored and made available to tourists.

“When our neighboring provinces get too commercialized and busy, tourists will come to Zambales and enjoy it here. Here they will experience the best beaches and breathtaking mountains and enjoy our mangoes. From there we will be noticed as a good destination and bring in other tourist which could benefit the entire province as well,” said Deloso.

“Our mangoes are very unique in that they are heart-shaped with a blushing red color, just like a lady who first hears and learns about love,” he added.

In line with the development of the province’s tourism sector, plans are afoot to build a world class resort in Zambales.

“I believe that tourism is the key that can bring in money to our province. That’s why we’re trying to maintain the cleanliness of Zambales as well as our 195 kilometers of white sand beaches” added Deloso.

Zambales’s image will now shift from being the province of indigenous people to a province blessed with vast natural resources.

RP as adventure site pushed in Taiwan
Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 08:14:00 03/09/2010
http://globalnation.inquirer.net/news/b ... -in-Taiwan

MANILA, Philippines—The Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) in Taipei is positioning the Philippines as the world’s leading adventure travel site for Taiwan’s about half a million leisure divers.

MECO is also focusing on other high-growth consumer segments such as honeymooners, corporate and incentive travelers, and mobile professionals.

Antonio I. Basilio, MECO managing director and resident representative, said the office would highlight this year the adventure sports and eco-tourism activities in the country beyond the traditional beach holiday packages.

“This will be the MECO Tourism Center’s priority, to market the Philippines a year-round eco-tourism and adventure sports destination. Outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers and sports-minded travelers will have all they can handle at our flagship destinations alone, including Cebu, Bohol, Boracay, Batangas and Palawan,” said Basilio.

Rene Reyes, MECO tourism director, said the campaign would be a major come-on for about half a million leisure divers in Taiwan.

Another advantage of the Philippines is its proximity to Taiwan, according to Reyes.

Basilio said the country has numerous eco-tourism and adventure sites like the dive and snorkeling sites, with Cabilao Island in Bohol a favorite because of its amazing reefs and rich marine life. “Schools of hammerhead sharks are regularly sighted there.”

Another popular dive destination is Malapascua in Cebu which is famous for its white sand beach and beautiful coral gardens, according to Basilio.

In the meantime, Reyes said people would also find the Philippines a great destination for weddings and honeymoons because of existing direct flights between Taiwan and top-class beach destinations like Boracay and Cebu.

“This is potentially a promising market for us since this is a high-volume, high-spending consumer segment,” Reyes added.
