Much Brouhaha over Martin Nievera’s rendition of National Anthem

Well, his version of our National Anthem last week had no slip ups, and I was surprised The National Historical Institute (NHI) still had something critical to say this time.  The NHI have always been critical of the singing of the anthem during international events that were aired on TV and radio. They also criticized the renditions of singers Sarah Geronimo, Kyla, Lani Misalucha and Bituin Escalante in the past.

“Despite repeated reminders, some artists continue to make adjustments to the anthem, which is not an ordinary piece of music open to free interpretation,” NHI chairman Ambeth Ocampo reportedly said.

Pacquiao Fight Day effect on Economy

Filipinos know that the only sport event that can clear the streets from traffic better than a UAAP Ateneo Lasalle game is a Pacquiao fight!

Aside from the streets clearing, malls have lesser traffic, prompting cinemas to offer the bout instead during actual fight time.  The same can be said as a marketing strategy by bigger restaurants that can afford pay per view to draw eating and drinking crowds.  Other effects include electricity usage going up, and crime rate plunging to virtual zero.

Manila cab driver Christopher Piolo plans to take his first Sunday off in four months this weekend. The reason: Manny Pacquiao is boxing.

Pacquiao demolishes Hatton in second round

Filipino pride southpaw Manny Pacquiao puts Ricky Hatton to sleep in the second round, taking a historic win with a devastating left to the chin that sent the Englishman to hospital.

Hatton came out all guns blazing in the first round but was floored twice by the Filipino southpaw and looked to be in big trouble before the bell went.

The second round saw Pacquiao connect with a huge left hook that completely poleaxed the Mancunian and ended proceedings without the need for a count.

Referee Kenny Bayless knelt over the apparently dazed and confused and sleeping Hatton and halted the fight after two minutes and 59 seconds of the second round, giving the Filipino star a victory and the International Boxing Organization junior welterweight title.

How much is ricky hatton worth

Ricky Hatton continues to manage himself. His dad Ray is his business adviser. ‘I don’t make a move without my dad saying,’ Hatton says. ‘When I first turned professional, I went to work for my dad. I was carpet fitting, and I was earning £150 to 200 a week. Then I turned pro at 18, and all of a sudden I was earning £3,000 (213,000 pesos) a fight. I had nine fights in my first year, so that’s not a bad living for an 18-year-old.

(author's update. The process discussed in this article may also be used to watch the Mayweather versus Marquez fight this September 19, 2009, and the upcoming Miguel Cotto versus Pacquiao this November 14,2009)

Last December 7, 2009, we edited this article from its original "Pacquaio vs. Marquez" title, as it was also applicable to pacman versus golden boy's fight.  Today, one year after the original article, we once again re-label and re-edit the article to fit the upcoming Pacquiao versus Hatton fight for May 2, 2009.

As with Oscar De La Hoya's fight arrangement disagreement over the purse split, (De La Hoya wanted 70-30, Pacquiao wanted 40), the Pacquiao Hatton fight almost did not push through with a similar disagreement over the purse.  Both parties stressed that each had the bigger crowd draw from their home country, thus each demanding a bigger cut from the PPV.

How much does Manny Pacquiao spend?

With our most recent MannyP article about his net worth, it is only logical that we do one that touches on his not so frugal spending. Here are a few of his documented expenses:

He reportedly sends his children to Brent International School in Laguna. He sponsored a 9-ball billiard game for the Philippines' best players to compete. At the pot is a million pesos stake to the tournament winner.

His trio of American co-managers receives usually 20 percent of his purse, while Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach earns 10 percent of the purse.   A chunk of his purse also goes to to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for taxes, and promotional fees to Top Rank.

Just how much is Manny Pacquiao worth

“He owns a rooster farm, a boxing promotions company and a basketball team called MP Warriors, which plays in the country’s top league,” wrote the Times.  Pacquiao, who also owns a lotto outlet, has appeared in movies and released CD albums. He recently signed a deal as an exclusive talent for GMA 7.
